Woodberry Poetry Room Collection of Broadsides

Includes poetry broadsides, predominantly in English, published in the United States, Canada, Ireland, and the United Kingdom. Authors include Gwendolyn Brooks, Robert Duncan, Allen Ginsberg, Seamus Heaney, Langston Hughes, and Adrienne Rich, among many others. The bulk of the broadsides are letterpress printed, with illustrations utilizing a variety of printmaking techniques, including screen printing, relief and intaglio processes, and lithography; some broadsides are entirely screen printed (notably those of Wild Hawthorn Press).

Elizabeth Joan Jennings was born on July 18, 1926, in Boston, Lincolnshire, England, to Henry Cecil Jennings, a medical officer of health, and Helen Mary Turner. Raised as a Roman Catholic, she attended Rye St. Antony School and later Oxford High School. When Jennings was thirteen years old she discovered poetry, first struck by Chesterton's The Battle of Lepanto. She found early encouragement in teachers and an uncle, himself a poet.
